How Universities Can Participate by Hosting a Brown Bag Discussion
Universities interested in contributing to the AI in Education Summer Institute can participate by hosting an online Brown Bag Discussion. This format allows institutions to engage their faculty, students, and the broader educational community in informal yet informative sessions on various AI-related topics.
What is a Brown Bag Discussion?
A Brown Bag Discussion is an informal meeting where participants bring their lunch ("brown bag" refers to the typical lunch bag) and gather to discuss specific topics. In the context of the AI in Education Summer Institute, these discussions will be conducted online, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Steps for Hosting an Online Brown Bag Discussion
Select a theme from the institute's key topics or propose a new, relevant subject related to AI in education. Ensure the topic is engaging and beneficial for the participants. See topics above for ideas. You may select your own topic.
Study Branding Guidelines: We are striving for a consistent feel across universities, similar to TEDx events. Please study the branding guidelines and sign the Hosting Agreement.
Select a Date and Time: Schedule the discussion during a lunch hour or another convenient time for your target audience. Consider different time zones if you are aiming for a national or international audience.
Identify Speakers and Panelists: Invite knowledgeable faculty members, industry experts, or researchers who can provide valuable insights into the chosen topic. Include diverse perspectives to enrich the discussion.
Set Up the Online Platform: Set up Zoom to host the discussion. Ensure the platform supports interactive features like Q&A, chat, and screen sharing.
Promote the Event: Use various channels to promote the event, including the university's website, social media, email newsletters, and academic networks. Provide clear instructions on how to join the online discussion.
Prepare the Agenda: Outline the flow of the discussion, including introductions, presentation of key points, open discussion, and Q&A sessions. Keep the session interactive and encourage participants to engage with questions and comments.
Facilitate the Discussion: On the day of the event, have a moderator to introduce the speakers, manage the time, and facilitate the discussion. Ensure a smooth flow and address any technical issues promptly.
Record the Session: Record the discussion (with participants' consent) to share with those who could not attend live. This also allows for further dissemination of the insights shared during the session.
Follow Up: After the event, send out a thank-you email to participants, including a link to the recording and any additional resources or readings related to the topic. Gather feedback to improve future sessions.
Collaborate with the Institute: Share the outcomes and key insights from your Brown Bag Discussion with the AI in Education Summer Institute organizers. This collaboration can help integrate your findings into the broader discussions at the institute and showcase your university’s contribution.
